East West Infiniti Train WAPDA to use State-of-the-Art Discharge Measurement Technology

Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler

The historic discharge measurement in waterways is based on a lot of lumped empirical “assumed” data, much of these lumped parameters were in discharge tables which were developed by the British.

To computer discharge measurement, techniques took into consideration;

(1)  Cross-section of a water channel.

(2)  Water level at two “stages” downstream.

(3)  Old antiquated “rating tables” (i.e. time taken by a water column to travel from stage level 1 to stage level 2, considering bottom and side friction of the en-route water channel, etc.

The only real-time element measured for determining the discharge is the Water Levels at Stage 1 and Stage 2 downstream, everything else is lumped figures.  Over the years the cross-sections and rating tables of waterways have become inaccurate and presumed discharge numbers are totally unreliable.

Siemens installed from IRSA got 20 years ago a system that just measured gate positions at various dams and barrages to establish how much and for how long a gate was opened to allow water flow downstream, and rest is the use of the inaccurate flow/discharge calculations based on old WAPDA rating tables.

It is imperative to note that the water issues between the provinces, for which the IRSA system was installed, will soon seem trivial compared to international water sharing issues we are (may) be facing with Neighbours both in the East and soon the west. So, it is extremely important that we have the capability to measure “real” discharges.

ADCP Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler technology is used to measure the actual and real volume of water (i.e. cusec) passing at a certain cross-section in a water channel, river, or canal. The system measures water velocity using pulsed sonic waves at all depths across the water channel at one cross-section and provides real volume/flow/discharge values.
